General information about the driving licence
Since 2010, the driving licence comes in credit card format. Its administrative validity is limited to 10 years, requiring renewal without a new exam. To obtain your licence, contact your local council office. Costs include a base fee of €20, plus any local council taxes.
Two-wheeler licence categories
AM Licence (Moped)
To ride a class B moped, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old (18 to carry a passenger)
- Complete a compulsory 4-hour training course at a driving school
- Pass the practical test (through private training or driving school)
Note: holders of a category B licence may automatically drive category AM vehicles.
Microcar without licence
Driving a microcar is permitted from age 16 in Belgium, subject to conditions:
- Hold an AM licence
- No passenger transport before age 18
Motorcycle licence (A1, A2, A)
Motorcycle licences follow a progressive structure:
- A1 (18 years): Motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW
- A2 (20 years): Motorcycles up to 35kW
- A (22 years or direct access at 24 years): All motorcycles
Category B Licence (Car)
Two routes are available to obtain a category B licence:
Standard route
- Available from age 18
- Minimum 3-month practice period
- Provisional licence valid for 18 months after 20 hours of lessons
Accompanied driving
- Available from age 17
- Minimum 9-month practice period
- Practical test from age 18
Heavy vehicle licences
Category C Licence (Lorry)
- C1: Vehicles from 3.5T to 7.5T
- C: Vehicles over 3.5T
Category D Licence (Passenger transport)
- D1: 8 to 16 seats + driver
- D: More than 8 seats + driver
