Speed management is an essential element for ensuring the safety of all road users. It must be adjusted according to traffic conditions, the environment and the vehicle's characteristics in order to prevent any accident.
B. Speed
Safe following distance
The driver must, taking into account their speed, maintain a sufficient safe distance between their vehicle and the one they are following.
Foreseeable obstacle
The driver must be able to stop in front of a foreseeable obstacle under all circumstances.
Approaching animals on the public road
Every driver must slow down when approaching animals and stop when the animals show signs of fright.
Speed in built-up areas
Speed is limited to 50 km/h with the possibility of lower or higher limits by sign. In the Brussels agglomeration, speed is limited to 30 km/h unless otherwise indicated.
Speed outside built-up areas
In Flanders and Brussels, speed is limited to 70 km/h, in Wallonia to 90 km/h, unless otherwise indicated by a sign. On two-way carriageways divided into four or more lanes with a physical separator, the limit is 120 km/h.
Respecting speed limits and adapting your speed to the circumstances not only ensures your own safety but also that of others. Responsible driving requires good speed management in all situations.
