The harmonious and safe coexistence between motor vehicles and more vulnerable road users such as cyclists and moped riders is essential on our roads. This module presents the rules and behaviour to adopt to protect these road users, who do not benefit from the same protection as motorists in the event of a collision.
Behaviour towards cyclists and moped riders
Caution towards cyclists
The driver of a motor vehicle or motorcycle must not endanger a cyclist or a two-wheeled moped rider on the public road. Extra caution must be exercised in the presence of children and elderly cyclists.
Lateral distance
The driver must leave a lateral distance of at least one metre between their vehicle and the cyclist or two-wheeled moped rider. Outside built-up areas, the lateral distance is at least one and a half metres.
Cyclist crossing
The driver may only approach a crossing for cyclists and two-wheeled moped riders at a moderate speed and must not endanger the users on it. The driver must not obstruct cyclists and moped riders as they complete their crossing of the carriageway at normal speed. If necessary, the driver must stop to let them pass.
Congestion
The driver must not enter a crossing for cyclists and two-wheeled moped riders if traffic congestion is such that they would likely be brought to a standstill on the crossing.
Observing the rules concerning cyclists and moped riders is not only a legal obligation but also a moral responsibility towards these vulnerable road users. By maintaining adequate safety distances, adapting your speed and paying extra attention at cyclist crossings, you actively contribute to collective road safety. Never forget that behind every bicycle or moped is a person whose protection largely depends on your responsible driving behaviour.
